Chamomile has long been cherished as a gentle plant. Used by the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, it remains popular across the world today. Nowadays, we’re most likely to encounter chamomile as a herbal tea and a popular warm beverage in Australia, particularly in the evening.
Of course, the quality of your chamomile tea matters, especially if you want chamomile to be on high rotation in your tea-drinking repertoire. So organic chamomile tea is an absolute must!
Let’s have a look at chamomile’s history and how to brew a decent cup of chamomile tea.
Chamomile — A Herb Steeped in History
Though the chamomile plant is native to southern and eastern Europe, its use has spread far and wide across many continents, with numerous cultures incorporating chamomile into traditional practices.
One of the earliest recorded mentions of chamomile appears in an ancient Egyptian scroll known as Eber’s Papyrus, which documented a wide range of plant uses. Chamomile was referenced as a valued botanical in daily life and cultural practices.
The ancient Egyptians held chamomile in high regard and used it in a variety of applications. It was also associated with the sun god Ra and featured in rituals, skincare preparations, perfumes, and embalming due to its pleasant apple-like scent and natural aromatic qualities.
In Ancient Greece, physician Hippocrates documented chamomile as a widely used herb, and later, Galen described its gentle nature and widespread use.
The Romans used chamomile in baths and incense for its fragrance, and by the Middle Ages, it was commonly found in European homes and gardens. Chamomile flowers were also scattered in gardens to provide fragrance and help deter pests.
